| Teens love to talk on the phone; Saranac Lake Young Arts Association
is glad that they do! When the SLYAA's 2003 phonathon student volunteer
coordinator Caroline Couture, recruited - with assistance from local arts
teachers - Saranac Lake students involved in the arts to help with SLYAA's
major annual fundraiser, she got the cream of the crop: fourteen teens ready
willing and able to tout the importance of the arts to the community - over
and over and over again!
On October 19th, these confident student volunteers helped raise over
$4000 in support of the arts, while also raising awareness of the importance
of involvement in the arts for Saranac Lake youth. Thanks to their persistence,
and to the many community members who pledged support, SLYAA will fulfill
its purpose. Contributions will be used to support the arts primarily through
enrichment, enhancement and facilitation of performances and arts programs,
and through providing annual student scholarship funds.
SLYAA was pleased to present scholarships and financial support to further
the study of arts for local students. Two $1000 Timothy Begor Memorial
Scholarship Award were presented to Toby Couture and Michael LaBombard at
graduation ceremonies this past June, cash awards were distributed to
participants in the Annual Student Art Show, and partial scholarships were
awarded to four area youth to attend music camps this summer. SLYAA's popular
Winter Carnival Baroque Concert was presented to a packed house; SLYAA supported
the annual Community Messiah Sing-along. They participated in the Lake Placid
Center for the Arts' special Community Arts Day, provided refreshments for
the Annual Saranac Lake High School Art Show, presented the first annual
Arts Recognition Awards evening, and co-sponsored the Lake Placid Sinfonietta's
concert in Saranac Lake this past July.
Now this annual event is a major source of our contribution base. Thanks to the phonathon, and our talkative teen-age helpers, SLYAA can continue to offer scholarships and grants to Saranac Lake youth, furthering our mission of supporting and nurturing the arts for the students of the Saranac Lake Central School District.
SLYAA is committed to providing Saranac Lake area youth with positive,
enriching arts experiences. The SLYAA Board - a group of 10-15 professionals
with an avid interest in the arts - meets regularly during the school year
to confirm their mission of supporting and nurturing the arts for Saranac
Lake area youth. Board members are first to recognize that they could not
accomplish so much without the continued support of the Tri-Lakes community.
If you missed a call from one of Saranac Lake's talented students and
would like to support the arts for local youth, you can mail your tax-deductible
contribution to:
SLYAA, Box 1130, Saranac Lake, NY 12983.
